Writing is a powerful tool for thinking, communication and discovery. This course supports primary teachers in developing effective classroom practices that help all learners become confident, capable writers. Aligned with the DfE Writing Framework (2025), the course provides practical, research-informed strategies to strengthen the teaching of writing from sentence construction to purposeful composition.

Teachers will explore how low-stakes writing routines and oral rehearsal can help pupils develop ideas and build confidence before writing. The course then focuses on the teaching of foundational writing skills, including sentence control and contextualised grammar, supported through live modelling and shared writing. Teachers will also examine how to guide pupils in writing with clear audience and purpose across both fiction and non-fiction texts.

Through practical examples and reflective activities, participants will learn how to apply the I do-we do-you do gradual release model to support independence. The course also explores how formative feedback, editing and revision can be used to strengthen writing and develop pupils’ sense of ownership as writers.

Key themes include:

– Writing as a tool for thinking and discovery
– Developing sentence control and structural understanding
– Writing with clear audience and purpose across fiction and non-fiction
– Modelling, scaffolding and shared writing approaches
– Using feedback, editing and revision to develop writer agency

Course outcome: Teachers will gain practical strategies to support pupils in developing confident, purposeful writing, helping them to build strong foundations, improve clarity and structure, and grow as independent writers.
