Inquiry-based learning: Engaging students through exploration and critical thinking
This course introduces teachers to Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL), a student-centred approach that promotes curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Drawing on educational research and classroom practice, it explores how inquiry can transform learning by placing students at the heart of exploration and discovery.
Teachers will examine differnet models of IBL, including structured, guided, open-ended, and problem-based inquiry, and consider how each can be adapted to suit different subjects and age groups. The course also explores the benefits of IBL, such as greater creativity, deeper engagement, and stronger real-world connections, while offering practical strategies to overcome common challenges.
Key themes include:
– Principles and types of Inquiry-based Learning.
– Building curiosity, questioning, and critical thinking.
– Designing tasks that promote exploration and problem-solving.
– Overcoming challenges and scaffolding inquiry effectively.
– Creating environments that nurture independent, active learning.
Course outcome: Teachers will have a strong understanding of how to implement Inquiry-Based Learning in practice, designing lessons and environments that empower students to think deeply, ask questions, and take ownership of their learning.
